Silk Road Communications is an international markets research consultancy that advises companies on how best to develop their businesses for success in China and Greater Asia.

William R. Dodson

Managing Director

 

William R. Dodson is Managing Director of Silk Road Communications, L.L.C. He has over fourteen years experience as a management consultant specializing product development and international relations.

He is a graduate of Cornell University. A former senior consultant with PriceWaterhouseCoopers L.L.P., he has worked on consulting projects in China, Europe, Turkey, Latin America and Canada. He also served as a senior-level consultant to KPMG Consulting.

He has led management initiatives across a variety of industries, including: high-tech, higher education, finance, healthcare, manufacturing, media and automotive. 

He has studied Spanish language, Turkish language and has been studying Mandarin Chinese for five years now, in which he has attained a comfortable conversational level. He now:

  • directs research efforts into the China market (sector composition, competition, opportunities and potential JV partners);

  • and advises American and Chinese executives involved in  negotiations between American businesses and companies in China.

He has had published dozens of articles, and has delivered talks to large audiences on the China markets, cross-cultural communications in the office place, problem-solving approaches in intercultural business initiatives, product development methodologies, project management and organizational change, and negotiation best-practices. He now writes and speaks on the dimensions of Doing Business in China and Greater Asia.

He is a Contributing Editor to the MWorld Journal of Business Management, a publication of the The American Management Association (AMA). He has served as Managing Editor of China Alert, a quarterly publication of the United States-China Chamber of Commerce (USCCC). He also writes a monthly column on cross-cultural issues in business entitled, "The Cultured Business", which is also syndicated to the Global Perspectives website of the AMA. 

For twenty years now Bill has been practicing the Chinese martial art T’ai Chi Ch’uan (Yang and Wu styles), as well as Broad Sword and Double-edged Sword forms – and still hasn’t gotten any of it right.

Zhang, Xiaoru

Director, China Operations

 

   

Zhang Xiaoru grows and manages Silk Road Communications relationship network of Chinese professionals and government officials throughout China. She is also the lynchpin tying together SRC's Chicago office with its office in Beijing.

She was born and raised in Beijing, China. Prior to joining Silk Road Communications, she was a practicing lawyer at the Changan Law Firm, where she represented business and private claims in court. She also negotiated the contractual agreements and reduced the bureaucratic red tape for foreign companies entering the China market.

Xiaoru started her career in the Chinese legal system as a Legal Officer for the Office of the Minister of Justice of the Peoples Republic of China. She arranged conferences on legal affairs in this capacity, and developed studies on Chinese legal management.

Xiaoru also served as the Deputy Chief Manager of the Financial Division of a large media company in Beijing. Her responsibilities included managing company operations on a daily basis as well as coordinating the activities of the financial division of the company. She also managed the daily business operations of a manufacturing company in Beijing. Xiaoru also helped launch an investment company in Beijing.

She brings to clients:

  • extensive experience in working and negotiating with Chinese in corporate and governmental settings;

  • a knowledge of the Chinese legal system to assist clients in China-based negotiations;

  • and in-depth experience to share with Westerners who want to understand the "Chinese Way" of doing business;

  • a get-down-to-business, no-holds-barred approach to business success in China.

Xiaoru is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and English.
